Plant the wolfberry, Goji

Native to the Far East and China, the wolfberry is a shrub that can grow plant in our latitudes and that resists our climate well.

Obviously, needing a lot of sun, its production of goji berries will not be the same in the Mediterranean as in the north of the Loire.

The lyciet therefore needs a sunny location to produce its Goji berries.

  • Dig a hole 2 to 3 times larger than that of the root ball
  • Mix the soil in your garden with potting soil
  • Fill the hole then water copiously
  • Tamp again then water

During the first years after planting, the wolfberry needs to be watered regularly but not excessively because it fears humidity.

Goji cutting:

This is the most common and easiest technique for cutting wolfberry for its Goji berries.

The cuttings consist of:

  • Take a branch that is still green about 10-15 cm
  • Remove the bottom leaves to keep only the top leaf pair
  • Plant the cutting in a cup filled with potting soil special cuttings preferably
  • Maintain a high level of ambient humidity and the slightly damp substrate
  • About 2 weeks later, the 1st roots appear
  • Transplant the cutting into a slightly larger pot then repeat the operation 2 to 3 times before putting it in the ground.

Warning: the wolfberry is very fragile when it is young and should not be placed in the ground in our latitudes until at least 2 to 3 years old.

Goji in pot

Growing the wolfberry for its goji berries is quite possible in pots and is even very suitable for indoor and apartment cultivation.

Choose a substrate suitable for growing lyciet, such as potting soil for Mediterranean plants or for citrus fruits.

The pot should be drilled and a drainage bed at the bottom of the hole made of gravel or clay balls allows the water to drain well.

  • In summer, you can leave the goji berries outside, from mid May until mid-September
  • In winter, it can be returned but preferably in a place not too heated
  • Water regularly but limited to never flood the roots
  • Repotting every 2 to 3 years is recommended

Harvesting Goji Fruit

Don't worry if your wolfberry doesn't give anything and the Goji berries are slow to arrive.

The harvest of Goji berries does not take place for 2 years and it does not become abundant until the 4th or even 5th year.

Goji size

Goji is a tree that is best pruned to prevent it from growing on a single branch and thus favor the densification of the branches.

Indeed, goji can grow on a single branch, which would be detrimental for the harvest of goji berries.

Thus, the more you prune your gogi, the more fruit it will produce.

There are 2 pruning periods for the gogi, in winter and in summer.

  • Remove dead wood in winter as well as weaker branches.
  • In summer, cut the main stems so as to cause new branches.
  • You can also pinch off the new branches above one eye as you go.
